Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to host their home matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium. This adds clarity to Bengaluru’s iconic cricket venue after the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) received official approval on Monday (March 16) from the Government of Karnataka to organize sporting events.
Following the stampede incident at this venue, tight safety measures and crowd management protocols will be implemented.
Chinnaswamy hosts the IPL 2026 season opener, where the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on March 28 (Saturday).
How KSCA Received Approval to Host IPL 2026 Matches?
The expert committee attended the inspection held on March 13 (Friday) at M.Chinnaswamy, and were impressed with the infrastructural changes at the stadium. Following a trial run, positive feedback was given to the Karnataka government.
Before granting full clearance, there were detailed discussions between the state authorities, KSCA, and RCB, where several factors were evaluated, such as:
- Safety measures
- Emergency exits
- Crowd management
- Seating arrangement
- Proper drainage facilities

In the wake of the stampede incident that happened during RCB’s maiden title celebration at this venue in June last year, the expert committee scrutinized the stadium’s preparedness to organize a high-profile event.
KSCA Official Statement in Media Release About RCB Home Matches
Soon after the Karnataka government granted permission to host RCB home matches at M.Chinnaswamy, the KSCA released a formal statement:
“Yes! Today, a meeting was held at the Vidhana Soudha, headed by Karnataka Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwar, alongside the Expert committee and the representatives of DNA, KSCA, and RCB.
The report submitted by the committee outlined the stadium’s readiness and compliance measures.
Considering the Expert Committee’s recommendations and following a detailed review, the Home Minister officially approved hosting the IPL 2026 matches at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The KSCA team, under Venkatesh Prasad’s leadership, has collaborated with the Home Minister, the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister, the Expert Committee, and the Sub-Committee. Other ministers, as well as the senior state government officials, ensured complete compliance with the Expert Committee’s recommendations.
This combined effort was pivotal in reviving cricket at Chinnaswamy Stadium. To host IPL matches safely and professionally, KSCA looks forward to proper coordination and aims to provide full support to RCB. M.Chinnaswamy Stadium to Host 7 Matches in IPL 2026
Including the season opener clash between RCB and SRH, the Chinnaswamy Stadium will host seven games in IPL 2026.
In other words, five home matches of the Royal Challengers in the league stages, added with two knockouts (including a playoff and final), will be played at this venue.
RCB will now play a total of five home fixtures at Chinnaswamy, with the remaining two home games to be staged in Raipur.
AI To Play Key Role in M.Chinnaswamy Stadium Security Measures
According to the latest reports, the Karnataka government has taken an innovative step by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and heat imaging features to enhance the security measures. This is one such appreciable preventive measure to avoid overcrowding at the stadium’s gates.
If any congestion is observed, the holding zones will remain shut down until fans are safely escorted to their designated seating sections.
Emergency Response Mechanisms at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium
Notably, the authorities have improvised the emergency response systems at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium with the inclusion of green corridors, triage centres, and ambulances stationed inside the stadium.
- Green Corridor: This ensures the faster movement of fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles inside the stadium without getting blocked by any traffic.
- Medical Triage Units: These are the centres equipped with beds and necessary facilities to provide emergency medical treatment if the situation demands.
- Number of Ambulances: There will be eight ambulances, out of which four will be stationed inside, while the remaining four will be stationed outside for instant medical aid. Additionally, the hospitals
Additional Safety Measures at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium
Strict regulations have been imposed regarding ticket sales, allowable seating limit, and redesigned entry points.
- Online and Offline Ticket Bookings: The organizers, alongside the KSCA and RCB management, confirmed that 80% of tickets can be booked online. While the remaining 20% includes offline booking three days before the match.
- Allowable seating limit: Although the maximum seating capacity is 35,000, only 28,000 members will be allowed inside the stadium.
- Multiple entry points: To mitigate the overcrowding at the entry points, spectators are allocated four different entry points rather than adhering to the traditional single access point.
- Color-Coded Tickets: The tickets will be color-coded such that spectators won’t have access to another gate with a different ticket color. For instance, an individual with a red-colored ticket will have access to the gate marked red and the seating in that specific stand.
