Australian batting stalwart Steve Smith, who served as the stand-in captain during Pat Cummins’ absence, opened up on Australia’s first test loss to England at home since 2011.
England, after a long wait of 5,468 days, secured a much-needed win at the Aussies’ backyard since their last success in Sydney back in 2011.
Ben Stokes and his men successfully chased down 175 on Day 02 of the fourth Ashes 2025-26 test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
‘A Tricky Contest’: Steve Smith After Australia’s Defeat
During the post-match interview, Steve Smith complained about the tricky nature of the MCG pitches that tilted the match towards bowlers’ favor:
“Yeah! Quite a tricky one this contest was. The match completed quickly than expected. Suppose we had scored an additional 50 or 60 runs, then we would have been in complete control till the end of the contest.
When you see 36 wickets fall across two days, it is something very unimaginable,” the 36-year-old said.
Steve Smith, who remained unbeaten in the second innings, having scored 24 runs from 39 balls (including 1 four), felt that the highly favorable seam conditions threatened Australia’s batting line-up.
The right-handed batter appreciated England’s efforts, particularly on Day 02, where the batting side accomplished the required target in a low-scoring affair:
“Certainly! England deserves credit for their impressive performance. Just look at the way they approached the game today and didn’t allow us to shift the momentum even once.
Also, they started the innings aggressively with the bat, having scored a few runs instantly. Although the ball softened, it didn’t offer much assistance. So, kudos to them for playing brilliantly,” Steve Smith added.
20-Wicket Fall on Day 01 of Ashes 2025-26 4th Test
The opening day of the fourth test at the MCG saw 20 wickets fall, with Australia and England’s first innings being concluded below a 200 total. Both teams’ pacers alone bagged 10 wickets each on Day 01.
Especially, the highly favorable seam conditions backfired on Australia’s explosive batting attack, which paved the way for their first-ever home test match loss to England since 2011.

England skipper Ben Stokes credited his team’s effort for making a massive comeback after losing the first three matches of the Ashes 2025-26:
“Yeah! It’s a great emotion right now for us. Root and I have been part of the team for a few tours that haven’t fetched positive results.
Particularly, the test match wrapped up in a couple of days, which was indeed a tough phase for us as a team.
Most importantly, we were able to maintain focus, which is the main aspect of cricket, while playing out on the field.

“No! This wasn’t the expected ones at all. While facing such challenging conditions, you need to focus and play skillfully. To be honest, this wasn’t something which you really wanted in a test match,” Stokes added.

Speaking about the 10 mm-thick grass on the MCG pitch, Smith said that it was challenging to strike the ball, which was the main reason why none of the batters played high-scoring knocks:
“Yes! Right now, it’s very hard to explain as the match started on a very slow note. It was due to the excessive dampness of the pitch that slowed down the ball after it hit the ground.
In reality, the ball didn’t bounce like a tennis ball and turned out to be sluggish because of the high moisture content.
The grass thickness caused the ball to settle on the grass. During the first innings, I felt that the ball travelled towards the mid-on while playing a defensive shot. It becomes challenging to drive the ball towards the preferred direction.
They did a little more than they originally intended. Suppose the thickness was dropped to 8 mm, the contest would have been fair between both sides,” Smith said.
Surprisingly, none of the batters managed to score even a single 50+ score in the recently concluded 4th test at the MCG.
Australian opener Travis Head was the highest run scorer, who scored 46 runs out of 67 balls (including 4 fours) in the second innings.
