During the ICC Men’s World Cup Qualifiers 2023, hosted by Zimbabwe in June 2023, the commentary team featured high-profile names, including Carlos Brathwaite, Andy Flower, and Ian Bishop, who attended the dinner ahead of the tournament.
While everyone during the discussion spoke about different participating teams, Andrew Leonard started the conversation about Nepal and opened up about his thoughts.
The Irish cricket commentator, although born in South Dublin, showed a great interest in the young Nepal team. He heaped praises on Karan KC’s power-hitting abilities, Dipendra Singh Airee’s top-notch fielding skills, and Kushal Bhurtel’s composed batting style. Despite his strong enthusiasm, other commentators mocked his favoritism towards Nepal.
Former West Indies Cricketer Supported Leonard’s Favoritism Towards Nepal
After a few days, Nepal lost to Zimbabwe by 8 wickets. But the 171-run opening partnership between the Nepal batters Kushal Bhurtel (99 runs) and Aasif Sheikh (66 runs) was indeed the highlight of the match.
Although Bhurtel missed his century by just 1 run, but played a top-notch knock for Nepal that set a foundation to set a 291 target against the hosts.
After the completion of the match, Leonard and West Indies’ legendary cricketer Ian Bishop were sitting backstage. The West Indian commentator turned to Leonard and said:
“See! Lenny, people teased you for praising Nepal so much. You know what, these Nepal players are so special. You were right with your words,” Bishop said.
Why the Commentary Panel Looked for the Irishman’s Knowledge about the Nepal Players?
Back in the 1990s in Ireland, the young Andrew Leonard watched a cricket match where the West Indies conveniently defeated England. At that time, Leonard was impressed by the Windies’ brand of playing cricket, including Viv Richards, Malcolm Marshall, and Brian Lara.
As a child, Leonard was passionate about cricket and compelled his parents to make him join a cricket club, which they weren’t aware of. Finally, his brother helped him find and join a club. Especially, cricket became the core aspect of his life when he received a cricket bat as a gift.
At a young age, he served at Hampshire for English County’s two seasons and then tried for the coaching role before retiring.
He believed that to reach higher levels, he needed to be a famous former cricketer and then make his transition into the administration role as the marketing manager at Cricket Ireland.
Eventually, he became a digital and social media manager at the International Cricket Council (ICC). This was the exact phase when the global governing body for the first time became aware of Nepal cricket.
During his tenure working at ICC, Leonard learned about the Nepali cricket fans and their passion for the sport. For instance, the ICC website crashed multiple times during Nepal’s match, which shows the huge level of traffic from just one nation.
A Choice That Changed Leonard’s Life
To play another summer of cricket, Leonard, before returning to Ireland, quit his job at the ICC, which indeed changed his life.
One of the organizers of the cricket matches in Ireland asked, “Hey! You are Mr. Cricket, and you know everything, having worked in ICC”.
For the first time, Leonard entered into the commentary role during the Everest Premier League (EPL) in 2018, where his close friend and former Irish player Kevin O’ Brien was selected to participate in the tournament.
At that time, O’Brien approached the EPL organizers to improve the simple livestreaming and broadcasting that were at a basic level at that time. He recommended his friend Leonard for the commentary role, given his knowledge about the associate teams and passion for the game.
During the same summer, Leonard opened a new chapter in his career by performing his first-ever commentary at an international level— the match between Ireland and Afghanistan.
From then onwards, Leonard’s bonding developed deeply with Nepal, and in return, the nation and its people welcomed him with open arms.
Nepal vs UAE 2023 Match: Leonard’s Favorite Game
Out of several matches that Nepal played, the clash against the UAE on 16th March 2023 remains a special one in Leonard’s memories. This was indeed the 140th match of the Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, where Nepal secured a 9-run victory (by DLS method) at home.
As the victory secured a spot for Nepal in the World Cup qualifiers, Leonard said, “Congrats! This could be the most celebrated moment and incredible game ever watched,” Leonard commented.
According to the Irish commentator, Nepal’s current standings are reminiscent of those of Afghanistan in 2015, when they marked their ODI World Cup debut. Still, the Rhinos need to improve certain drawbacks. Overall, Leonard believes that Nepal’s progress is evident given their similarities to Afghanistan and is confident that the national team could become the next ICC full member and 13th test nation as well.
