It is a noteworthy fact that the towering fast bowler dismissed the Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane and wicketkeeper-batter Hardik Tamore in both innings.

Ultimately, Jammu and Kashmir’s 5-wicket triumph over includes Umar’s crucial contribution that tamed the firepower of Indian batting stalwarts.

Let’s explore Umar Nazir’s early life, notable stats, and his recent outstanding performance in the Ranji Trophy against Mumbai that overshadowed Rohit Sharma’s comeback in domestic cricket.

Early Life of Umar Nazir Mir

Born on 3rd November 1993, Umar Nazir Ahmed Mir hails from Malikpora, a small rural town in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir.

The 6 feet 4 inches tall bowler featured in List A and First Class Cricket for his side, but was unsold in several Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions. He tried his luck in the 2017 IPL auction, entering at a base price of INR 10 lakhs, but remained unsold. Whereas, in the 2018 and 2019 auctions, the tall bowler registered with a base price of INR 20 lakhs, but the outcome was still the same.

At the age of 24 years and 349 days, Umar Nazir was part of the India C squad for the Deodhar Trophy 2018-19, which included big players such as Suresh Raina and Ajinkya Rahane. He made his appearance in the second match against India A but went wicketless in his eight-over spell. At last, India C won the finals, but Mir was excluded from the playing XI for the title clash.

Despite not playing a single IPL match in his career, he has a deep connection with the rich-cash league. Initially, Umar worked as a net-bowler with Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2020 and continued with the franchise till the 2022 season. Later, he joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) for the same role in 2023.

Even though he faced multiple struggles in his progress to feature in domestic cricket, his talent upgraded in every match he played. Especially, his bowling style has left numerous talented batters clueless in the domestic arena.

Umar Nazir Mir’s Incredible Performance Against Mumbai in Ranji Trophy Elite 2024-25

Mumbai’s batting line-up was completely ripped apart by Umar Nazir, who showcased his raw skill and experience in domestic cricket against the international level cricketers and bagged 6 wickets in the entire match (including both innings).

Here is how the tall pacer single-handedly troubled Mumbai’s famed batters that left the entire team struggling at 41-5 in 14.5 overs of the first innings:

1. Rohit Sharma:

Umar Nazir set the tone for his team by dismissing Team India’s skipper Rohit Sharma for just 3 runs out of 19 balls faced in the first innings. The Hitman faced challenges during his short presence at the crease. Especially, he found it tough to strike boundaries against Umar’s deliveries. In contrast to the international test matches, the 37-year-old had a tough time forming a steady partnership with his opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal.

2. Hardik Tamore:

The right-handed batter Hardik Tamore fell to Umar’s brilliance as he was dismissed for a single-digit score in both innings, accumulating just 7 runs out of 40 balls and 1 run out of 5 balls.

3. Ajinkya Rahane:

Batting at No.4, Ajinkya Rahane tried his level best to maintain a secure partnership that could steady Mumbai’s sinking ship. Unfortunately, the captain’s knock came to an end for just 12 runs out of 17 balls faced (including 2 fours) as he was clean bowled by Umar Nazir’s sharp delivery.

4. Shivam Dube:

Indian cricket team’s pace bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube’s 3-ball-duck further deteriorated Mumbai’s chances of posting a formidable total. Although Mir’s bowling skills restricted Dube’s stay at the crease for a shorter period, the credit goes to Kanhaiya Wadhawan for taking a fine catch.

Final Thoughts:

Taking inspiration from the former legendary Aussie cricketer Glenn McGrath, the right-arm medium pacer has always held his ambitions high of sporting the Indian national cricket team’s jersey.

However, Umar Nazir is yet to make his international debut. Overall, it is expected that the talented pacer’s fortunes might change after this Ranji Trophy season with his proven ability to swing the ball in both ways and perform exceptionally under pressure.
