Geopolitical tensions between India and Pakistan have left the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in jeopardy of losing the hosting rights for ICC Events in 2029 and 2031.
The bilateral relationship between these two nations has been extremely low and deteriorated to the worst extent following the Pahalgam terror attacks.
With BCCI’s hosting rights in danger, Australia emerges as the potential replacement to host the Champions Trophy 2029 and the ODI World Cup in 2031.
Why ICC Plans to Shift ICC Future Events Out of India?
With the increasing political rift between India and Pakistan, the ICC is considering shifting the forthcoming tournaments outside India to minimize the logistical complications.
BCCI’s instructions caused Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman to be expelled from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to the political conflict between India and Bangladesh.
The Australian news outlet reported that the global governing body is keen to ensure the smooth progress of the tournament without any disruptions due to political turbulence. Several reports claimed that Australia emerges as the frontrunner to gain the hosting rights of both core events of the ICC.
Why Australia Can Be A Proven Alternative?
Having hosted the previous editions of the World Cups in 2015 (ODI) and 2022 (T20I), Australia emerges as a potential frontrunner to take over the hosting rights from India.
At the same time, ICC might reconsider its strategies as Australia hosts multiple tournaments consecutively, which include the men’s T20 World Cup 2028.
Complex Situation for ICC to Reconsider India’s Hosting Rights
Bangladesh’s exit from the T20 World Cup 2026 added questions to India’s credibility in hosting high-profile ICC tournaments.
Having cited security reasons, Bangladesh was keen to play all the matches in Sri Lanka. After ICC denied their multiple requests, the national team was not ready to play the tournament in India. Subsequently, Scotland was named the official replacement in the Group C fixtures.
Additionally, the uncertainty over India’s future tours of Bangladesh for the bilateral series poses huge concerns for the integrity and spirit of the sport.
To explain in simple terms, India’s strained relationship with Pakistan and Bangladesh has now prompted the ICC to consider a neutral venue like Australia to host the Champions Trophy 2029 and the ODI World Cup 2031.
India and Pakistan Agreement Not To Play in Each Other’s Countries
Since the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008, India never traveled to Pakistan for any of the international cricket fixtures.
Earlier, India cut off bilateral series ties with Pakistan, having hosted the last white-ball series back in the 2012-13 season. Notably, Pakistan visited India in 2016 and 2023 for ICC tournaments.
Ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025, the BCCI and PCB mutually agreed to the hybrid model agreement proposed by the ICC. As per the deal, India and Pakistan would face off against each other at a neutral venue if either of the nations hosts big tournaments.
Also, the same model is being followed in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 as Pakistan is playing all its matches in Sri Lanka.
Following the Pahalgam terror attacks, India remained strong with their “No Handshake” policy with any of the Pakistani players, staff, officials, and media.
Pakistan’s Boycott Threat Likely to Impact BCCI Hosting Rights
To be noted, Pakistan extended its solidarity with Bangladesh following their withdrawal from the T20 World Cup 2026.
Hadn’t Pakistan taken a last-minute decision to reverse its boycott against India, there could have been a massive loss of USD 250 million approximately, including the commercial and broadcast revenues.
Finally, the high-octane clash was held successfully in Colombo last Sunday night (on February 15), where India recorded a dominating 61-run victory.
For the unversed, the issue was resolved following immediate negotiations with the Pakistani governments and the cricket boards. However, the involvement of the ICC and the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board played a pivotal role in changing Pakistan’s stance.
What if India-Bangladesh Co-Hosts World Cup 2031?
As India and Bangladesh were earlier named as the co-hosts of the ICC World Cup 2031, the fear looms if either team opts out of fixtures hosted by the other.
Suppose India solely hosts the Champions Trophy 2029, then it could be a repeat of the T20 World Cup 2026, as Bangladesh’s travel to the nation remains unclear.
Overall Opinion
While the official confirmation still remains pending, the cricket officials are constantly exploring possible venues to host future ICC events.
There is no doubt that India holds the reputation as the core financing centre of the sport, having hosted ICC tournaments frequently. But the strained political relationship makes the ICC call for a reassessment of the hosting venues.
