ENG vs IND 2025: Can the Injured Rishabh Pant Be Fully Fit to Play in the 4th Test? Shubman Gill Gives Big Update

Rishabh Pant

ENG vs IND 2025: Following India’s narrow defeat to England by 22 runs in the recently concluded Lord’s test, the debate now shifts to availability of Rishabh Pant for the highly crucial fourth test at Old Trafford, Manchester, starting on July 23.

The Indian vice-captain injured his left index finger on Day 01 of the third test has raised uncertainties about his participation in the forthcoming clash.

As India trails by 2-1 in the ongoing five-match series, Pant’s presence as a wicketkeeper and batter becomes extremely important, as he is one of the most reliable run scorers for his team.

However, the Indian test captain Shubman Gill reveals a big update that his deputy Pant will be fit enough for the next match, saying that his injury isn’t as severe as per the latest scan reports.

Shubman Gill About Rishabh Pant’s Finger Injury

During the post-match conversation, Gill spoke about Pant’s injury, which brought huge relief for fans as well as the Indian team management:

“Yeah! Rishabh underwent scans recently, and there isn’t any major injury. So, we hope that he will become fit for the next test.

I believe Pant is in good condition now. Moreover, it is good news that he didn’t suffer a severe injury. We hope that he will be fit by the next test match in Manchester,” Gill told the reporters.

How Rishabh Pant Sustained Injury in the Lord’s Test?

Rishabh Pant injured his finger while attempting to collect a delivery towards the leg side bowled by Jasprit Bumrah in the 34th over of the first innings. He sustained a huge blow to his index finger of his left hand and was in noticeable pain. A long break was taken in that particular session as he required immediate treatment from the physios.

Although he tried to complete that particular over, but wasn’t able to perform wicketkeeping duties. He was later substituted by Dhruv Jurel to perform his role behind the stumps for the remaining test match.

Rishabh Pant’s Batting Performance at the Lord’s Test

Even after facing discomfort with his injured index finger, Rishabh Pant came to bat at the No.5 position in the first innings. Out of 112 deliveries faced in the first innings, the left-handed batter scored 74 runs, by smashing 8 fours and 2 sixes, thereby highlighting his importance to his team in pressure situations.

Every time Pant struck the ball with his bat, his pain was evident. Particularly during India’s crucial 193-run chase on Day 05, the vice-captain entered into action when India required yet another 135 runs to win with 6 wickets to spare. But Pant was able to score just 9 runs off 12 deliveries.

Notably, England grabbed their first wicket of Day 05, dismissing Rishabh, whose defense was ineffective against Jofra Archer’s lethal delivery that struck the off-stump.

Rishabh Pant’s Performance in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy 2025

After playing 3 test matches, Rishabh Pant currently stands as the second leading run scorer after his captain Shubman Gill (607 runs in 6 Innings) in the ongoing Anderson Tendulkar Trophy 2025.

Pant amassed 425 runs in 6 innings at an average of 70.83 and a strike rate of 78.41, including 2 centuries and half-centuries each. The young cricketer’s presence as an aggressive middle-order batter and an energetic wicketkeeper behind the stumps has been a boon for the Indian team.

What if Rishabh Pant Doesn’t Get Fully Fit Before the Manchester Test?

Dhruv Jurel is the clear frontrunner to replace Rishabh Pant as a batter and wicketkeeper, only if he doesn’t get completely fit before the 4th test in Manchester.

Despite KL Rahul’s proven wicketkeeping abilities, his role would be limited as a full-time opener to avoid adding additional burden on him.

Although Jurel’s composed batting style is different compared to Pant’s dynamic approach, his presence in the batting line-up could certainly help prevent the lower-order collapses.

Conclusion

With one week left for the Manchester Test, the Indian medical team is currently busy monitoring the health status of Rishabh Pant, who is expected to recover completely and be available for selection in the playing XI.

While Pant sustained an injury in the middle of the test innings at Lord’s, Jurel was roped in as a substitute only to perform the wicketkeeping duties.

However, the middle-order batter wouldn’t be allowed to maintain a substitute during the next test at Old Trafford, citing the same injury reasons. In other words, the ICC rules won’t allow proceeding with a substitute for a prolonged injury.

So, to ensure Rishabh’s participation, he needs to ensure to get completely fit before the forthcoming fixture.
