ENG vs IND: The fourth day of the first test match in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy saw KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant scoring brilliant centuries that propelled India to post a 350-plus total.
However, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue bagged 3 wickets each, which limited the visitors’ second innings total to 364 in 96 overs at Headingley, Leeds.
Team India started Day 04 on 90/2 but faced a huge blow when they lost the wicket of their skipper, Shubman Gill, at a crucial phase.
But it was Pant and Rahul’s stellar performances added a valuable partnership of 195 runs for the fourth wicket. The duo batters helped to set a stiff target of 371, while Ravindra Jadeja, Karun Nair, and Shardul Thakur failed to make a big impact with the bat.
Day 04 concluded at stumps with England scoring 21 in 6 overs without losing a wicket. The hosts still need to chase 350 with 10 wickets in hand.
KL Rahul’s 9th Test Century: ENG vs IND
Indian opener KL Rahul played a superb knock of 137 runs from 247 balls (including 18 fours) at a strike rate of 55.47. Till his presence at the crease, there was hope that India could aim for at least 400 runs or more to have a chance of winning the opening test.
No Somersault from Rishabh Pant After Scoring Back-to-Back Test Centuries
As Rishabh Pant became the second wicketkeeper in the world to score two consecutive tons in a single test match, fans waited eagerly to witness his somersault celebration.
Even the former legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar, gesturing with his hands from the stands, requested the 27-year-old to perform his iconic celebration once more. In response, Pant signalled that he would do it some other time.
Pant adapted to the challenging conditions and didn’t compromise on his aggressive batting style. He batted at a strike rate of 84.29 and played a fantastic knock of 118 runs by facing just 140 deliveries, which included 15 fours and 3 sixes.
Ravindra Jadeja’s 25-Run Knock Not Enough For India to Post 400+ Target: ENG vs IND
While wickets were falling at the other end, Ravindra Jadeja remained not out and scored 25 runs out of 40 balls (including 2 fours and 1 six). Although he batted at a strike rate of 62.50, the England bowlers ensured to keep him away from the strike to instantly grab the wickets of the tailenders.
Despite showing the signs of aggression, the lack of support from the other side concluded India’s innings before setting a competitive target of 400 or above.
India’s Collapse: 29 Runs and 5 Wickets in Last 11.4 Overs
After Brydon Carse dismissed KL Rahul, Team India’s instant fall of wickets once again repeated. From 333/5 in 84.2 overs to 364/10 in 95.6, the Indian batting line-up collapsed by compiling just 29 runs for a loss of 5 wickets.
Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue’s Triple Wicket Hunt
While Brydon Carse dismissed Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (4 runs) on Day 03, he returned stronger on the next day and claimed two more wickets of Shubman Gill (8 runs) and KL Rahul (137 runs).
Josh Tongue’s triple wicket in the 91st over, bundled out India’s total below 400 as the three lower-order batters, namely Shardul Thakur (4 runs), Mohammed Siraj (0), and Jasprit Bumrah (0) departed at an early stage.
Carse’s 3/80 in 19 overs, added with Tongue’s 3/72 in 18 overs, dismantled the visitors’ batting line-up despite the game-changing centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
England Openers Set to Make a Great Start On a 371 Run Chase
Chasing a 371 target, England’s opening batters Zak Crawley (12 runs from 25 balls — including 2 fours) and Ben Duckett (9 runs from 11 balls) gave a positive start to their team. The duo batters concluded the fourth day by scoring 21 runs in 6 overs.
Can England Win the Opening Test of Anderson Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy?
YES! The stage is now perfectly set for England as they need 350 runs to score in 90 overs with 10 wickets hanging on. However, the weather forecast reports indicate that the rain might threaten to play a spoilsport with 80% chances of rainfall occurring during the morning hours. If such happens, then the first test of the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy might be concluded as a draw.
