South Africa’s dynamic batter David Miller confirmed that he didn’t announce any retirement from the T20 internationals (T20Is) format by announcing to the world that his best is yet to come. Especially after South Africa faced a heartbreaking 7-run loss to India in the T20 World Cup 2024 finals, several rumors arose about Miller’s retirement from the shortest format of the game.
When David Miller shared an emotional post following South Africa’s defeat in their maiden World Cup final; various rumors and reports started to speculate that the 35-year-old South African cricketer was planning to retire from T20Is. Few others claim that Miller was disappointed for not finishing the game for his team in a crucial chase of 177 runs.
David Miller’s Instagram story: The Best is Yet to Come
In response to the rumors, David Miller gave a stunning response on his Instagram story:
“Not at all! In contrast to the reports, I haven’t declared my retirement in T20 international cricket. However, I will be available for the South African cricket team. Remember that the best is yet to come soon,” Miller posted in his Instagram story.
David Miller Runs in T20 World Cup 2024
As a middle-order batter for the South African cricket team, David Miller played 9 matches and scored 169 runs in 8 innings at an average of 28.16 and strike rate of 102.42, including a fifty to his name. He smashed 10 fours and 8 sixes in this entire edition of the tournament.
Miller recorded this season’s highest individual score of 59 runs from 51 balls against the Netherlands in the group stages.
Considering his overall T20I career, David Miller scored 2,439 runs in 109 innings at an average of 33.41 and strike rate of 140.66, which includes his highest score of 106 runs. He achieved 2 centuries and 7 half-centuries in this shortest format of cricket.
South African batters domination and Team India’s bowlers comeback in the finals
After Heinrich Klaasen smashed 24 runs in the 15th over bowled by Axar Patel; the game seemed to be in favor of South Africa as the equation was reduced to 30 runs from just 30 balls.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma believed that only the fast bowlers could bring the game-changing moments for the team. In the next over (16th over), Jasprit Bumrah just conceded 4 runs, which included 3 dot balls.
Consequently, the pace-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya concluded Heinrich Klaasen’s innings in the 17th over, who had to depart after scoring 52 runs from 27 balls (including 2 fours and 5 sixes) at a strike rate of 192.59. Hardik conceded just 4 runs in that over but took a crucial wicket including a dot ball.
Once again, Jasprit Bumrah was given a chance to bowl in the 18th over and conceded just 2 runs with 3 dot balls. But, the Indian pacer took another core wicket of South Africa’s bowling all-rounder Marco Jansen.
Arshdeep Singh completed his 4-over spell in style by conceding just 4 runs and forcing the opponent team batters to play 3 dot balls in the 19th over.
Until the commencement of the 20th over, the Indian pace bowlers showed their domination in such a way that the equation of 30 runs from 30 balls was reduced to 16 runs from 6 balls.
David Miller’s Dismissal: A Turning Point of the Game
Hardik Pandya took the responsibility of bowling the final over of the match. South Africa, after losing 6 wickets, had to rely on David Miller, the only power-hitter on the crease after Klaasen’s dismissal, to score 16 runs off the last over. The entire pressure was on him to take his team to the winning total.
On the first ball of the last over, Miller tried to smash for a six off a wide-full toss delivery bowled by Hardik Pandya. However, Suryakumar Yadav ran towards the long-off to take one of the best catches in cricket history. Initially, the 33-year-old Indian cricketer fumbled but managed to throw the ball in the air while reaching the boundary ropes and grabbed an amazing catch after stepping onto the field.
Suryakumar Yadav’s catch was a game-changing moment that crashed South Africa’s hopes of winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in their maiden ICC tournament finals.
After Miller’s dismissal, South Africa managed to score just 8 runs and lost a wicket of Kagiso Rabada’s in the next 5 deliveries of the same over and wasn’t able to score another 8 runs to achieve a historical victory.
Conclusion:
Unfortunately, the wicket of David Miller resulted in South Africa getting choked up once again in the crucial phases of the ICC tournaments. Although, David Miller scored 21 runs from 17 balls (including 1 four and 1 six) at a strike rate of 123.53; but it wasn’t enough for his team to avoid facing a heartbreaking loss in their first-ever final of ICC Men’s World Cup tournament.
