Big Controversy in WI vs AUS 1st Test 2025: Daren Sammy Fined for Criticizing Third Umpire!

Daren Sammy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed a 15% match fee on the current West Indies head coach, Daren Sammy. The former Windies skipper was found guilty of openly criticizing the third umpire, Adrian Holdstock, over several controversial decisions. This incident occurred during Day 2 of the first test between West Indies and Australia at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

However, the West Indies didn’t have a great start to the new World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Despite taking a 10-run lead in the first innings, they lost to Australia by 159 runs and allowed the visitors to take a 1-0 lead in the 2-match test series.

‘I Demand Consistency in Decision-Making’: Daren Sammy’s Slams Holdstock

After the second day of the test match, Daren Sammy voiced his furious reaction against Holdstock and said that his team is insecure about the particular umpire since their recent white-ball series in England:

“Yeah! We don’t want ourselves to get trapped in a situation where we doubt certain umpires. My question is that is there any complaint against this team? But when you become aware of decision after decision, then it becomes mandatory to raise a question.

I have noticed this issue only with this umpire, which is something very disturbing for me, that started since the limited-overs series against England this year. It’s very annoying. I just demand consistency in the umpire’s decision-making process,” Sammy said.

It is reported that there was a detailed conversation between Sammy and the match referee Javagal Srinath after the completion of Day 2 to discuss about the TV umpire’s controversial decisions.

‘Decisions are Not At All Fair Enough’: Daren Sammy Opens Up

Sammy was disappointed with the TV umpire’s decision during the crucial moments of the game and felt that his team was treated unfairly :

“No! It is all about being consistent across the nation’s cricket board when there is doubt about something. Scrutinizing the images, it is understood that the decisions for both teams are not fair enough. I just demand equality,” Sammy said during the post-match conversation.

Also, the Windies skipper Roston Chase supported Sammy’s statement after the match by saying that umpires wouldn’t face any consequences for their judgmental errors, unlike the cricketers. So far, Roston hasn’t been sanctioned with any punishments for his remarks against the match officials.

West Indies vs Australia 1st Test 2025: Daren Sammy vs Third Umpire Controversy!

The caught behind and LBW dismissals declared by the third umpire, Holdstock, frustrated Sammy.

  • Caught Behind Dismissal: West Indies wicketkeeper Shai Hope was adjudged out for a caught behind dismissal. The wicketkeeper-batter batted at a strike rate of 52.75 and scored 48 runs out of 91 balls (including 5 fours), thereby falling 2 runs short of registering his 6th test fifty.

However, the Australian batter Travis Head survived a similar caught behind appeal, as the decision was supposed to be made if the ball had contact with the ground or the wicketkeeper took a fair catch.

  • LBW Appeal: There was another instance where the Aussies appealed for an LBW dismissal against Roston Chase, despite the clear visuals of the ball having contact with the bat’s edge before the pads. As a consequence, the hosts’ momentum was spoiled as Roston had to depart, scoring 44 runs from 108 balls (including 1 four and 1 six).

Penalties on Daren Sammy

Daren Sammy was found guilty of breaching Article 2.7 of its Code of Conduct as he openly criticized the match officials. The 41-year-old was not only penalized 15% of his match fee, but also assigned one demerit point, which is indeed his first in the past 24 months.

Along with the third umpire Holdstock himself, the complaints were made by the on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Nitin Menon, along with the fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.

However, this is just a Level 1 offense that involves a minimum charge of an official warning, and the maximum penalty can include taking away a player’s 50% of the match fee or handing over two demerit points.

Not Daren Sammy! This West Indies Player was the First to be Penalized in the Barbados Test

However, Daren Sammy wasn’t the first from the West Indies team to be fined in the Barbados Test, as the ICC imposed a 15% fine on the fast bowler Jayden Seales.

After Pat Cummins’ dismissal on Day 1, the Windies right-arm medium pacer gave a fiery sendoff to the Aussie skipper.

Furthermore, Jayden was found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct and handed a demerit point. The law applies to those players who use aggressive language or gestures that could insult a batter upon their dismissal in any international game.

Conclusion

While Beau Webster dismissed Shai Hope in the first innings, it is to be noted that the caught behind dismissal isn’t a fair one. This is because the TV umpire’s decision completely favored the fielding side. Although Alex Carey caught the ball, the replays showed that the ball touched the ground. Still, Hope was adjudged to be OUT.

Sammy’s frustration raises the inconsistency in the TV umpire’s decision-making as the wickets of the well-settled batters Roston Chase and Shai Hope caused West Indies to lose their grip on achieving a notable victory against Australia.
