BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s travel to Pakistan and his participation in Champions Trophy 2025 pre-tournament events including a press conference and official photoshoot in Karachi is currently under discussion.
The eight-team captains’ event ahead of the ICC’s prestigious tournament will most likely occur on February 16 or 17. However, the BCCI hasn’t received any updates from ICC so far.
Earlier, Pakistan was supposed to host the entire ninth season of the Champions Trophy. The political rift between these two countries has resulted in the relocating of India’s matches in the tournament to the UAE.
After India refuses to travel to their neighboring nation for the tournament, the questions arise on the Hitman’s arrival in Pakistan— the main hosting venue to conduct the pre-tournament captains press meet. As a tradition, all the participating team captains must assemble before the commencement of any ICC event to discuss their plans and goals.
In addition, there are reports that the Indian cricket team isn’t ready to place Pakistan’s name on their jersey throughout the tournament, despite being the hosting nation. This fuels the controversy, citing the conflict between the BCCI and the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board).
Devajit Saikia About Rohit Sharma’s Visit to Pakistan
While the speculations about Rohit Sharma’s tour to Pakistan are fueled to a peak level, Devajit Saikia breaks silence on the rumors by saying that the discussion about this matter is still ongoing:
“Not Sure! Rohit Sharma traveling to Pakistan for ICC media events is one such discussion that is still not yet finalized”, the BCCI’s newly appointed secretary said.
PCB Official Disappointed with Indian Team Not Printing Host Nation’s Name on Their Jersey
One of the PCB officials slammed BCCI for not allowing the Indian team to print Pakistan’s name on their jersey:
“See! It is not at all good as BCCI is combining politics with cricket. Initially, they refused their players to travel to Pakistan. Now, they aren’t willing to allow their captain to our country for the tournament’s opening ceremony. Additionally, reports are speculating that they refused to print the host nation’s name (Pakistan) on their jersey. We firmly believe that the ICC, which is the global governing body wouldn’t entertain such activities and provide their support to Pakistan,” the PCB official said.
BCCI to Follow All Uniform Related ICC Rules: Says Saikia
Meanwhile, Devajit Saikia responded to the media speculations regarding BCCI’s refusal to place the host nation’s name on their jersey. He clarified that Team India will follow the dress code specified by the ICC for the Champions Trophy 2025:
“Look! BCCI will strictly follow all ICC rules related to the dress code throughout the Champions Trophy. Similar to what other teams adhere to about the tournament’s logo and uniform, we are certainly going to implement this by maintaining the tradition and spirit,” Saikia said.
Typically, players’ jerseys during the ICC tournaments consist of the event’s logo printed along with the tournament’s name, host nation, and year at the bottom.
PCB’s Request to ICC
The PCB has approached the ICC to make sure that the Champions Trophy photoshoot, opening ceremony, and pre-tournament activities take place as per the traditional practices. However, it becomes clear that the ICC is yet to finalize the logistics and travel schedule for all eight teams.
In comparison, the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in the USA and West Indies didn’t consist of any captain’s event ahead of the tournament. As teams were involved in participating in warm-up games, the ICC planned for an official launch through a light projection ceremony that involved all 20 team captains projected onto the Rockefeller Centre building located in New York City. As a result, there are discussions that the ICC might implement the same approach for the forthcoming 50-over tournament.
Possibly, the teams might play upto two-warm up matches based on their arrival time ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Conclusion:
There isn’t a clear answer as to whether the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will fly to Pakistan or not for the official captains meeting held by ICC for the Champions Trophy 2025. After the 1996 World Cup, this is the first ICC event that Pakistan is set to host. As the tournament is set to kickstart on February 19, it remains to be seen how BCCI handles such a complicated situation with the continuing political tension between these two nations. Also, it isn’t confirmed if the Board wold require the permission from Indian government to allow Rohit to enter Pakistan.
Finally, the entire cricket world is left in suspense as to witness if the ICC once again plans for the light projection show or host pre-tournament captains’ event either in Pakistan or shift to a neutral venue like the UAE.
