The semifinalists of Group A have been confirmed with India and New Zealand qualifying for the knockout stages of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This confirmation comes after New Zealand’s recent 5-wicket victory against Bangladesh on February 24 (Monday) at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.
However, in their last group-stage match, India and New Zealand will lock horns against each other on March 02 (Sunday). As both the teams have qualified for the semis, the outcome of the forthcoming match will determine the table topper of Group A.
But, the main question arises as to which team from Group B will face Team India in the first semi-final match of the Champions Trophy 2025 on March 04 (Tuesday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS).
A Wrap Up to Group A Show: Pakistan and Bangladesh’s Early Exit
Pakistan and Bangladesh with zero points are knocked out of the tournament having lost their two consecutive matches by a huge margin:
| Team | Outcome in Group A matches of CT 2025 | Present Net Run Rate in Points Table |
| Pakistan | Lost by 60 Runs to New Zealand | -1.087 |
| Lost by 6 Wickets to India | ||
| Bangladesh | Lost by 6 Wickets to India | -0.443 |
| Lost by 5 Wickets to New Zealand |
It is understood that the Pakistan vs Bangladesh match on February 27 (Thursday) will be held just for formality, having no consequence on the semifinalists of Group A.
Pakistan’s Disappointing Season in CT 2025
Pakistan as the hosting nation of the tournament’s ninth edition is no longer the defending champions as they have been eliminated at the group stage, which is the first time in 16 years of the Champions Trophy’s history. It was during the 2009 season, that the host nation South Africa finished at the bottom position of the points table after losing two out of their three games.
The back-to-back losses against New Zealand and India concluded their campaign at an early stage. Their last match against Bangladesh will be a competition of pride to secure some points to finish the tournament on a positive note.
Bangladesh’s Failure to Qualify for CT 2025 Semis
Having qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2017 under Mashrafe Mortaza’s leadership, Bangladesh failed to repeat the same magical moments.
Ahead of the tournament, Bangladesh’s current captain Najmul Hossain Shanto gave a confident statement of becoming the champions in the 2025 edition. Despite exhibiting a glance of extraordinary talent, the Tigers’ campaign ended prematurely after losing their two straight games against India and New Zealand.
One of the main reasons is that their batting line-up wasn’t able to post challenging totals and their weak bowling attack failed to defend the modest targets.
India and New Zealand’s Dominant Start to CT 2025
The Indian cricket team under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy had a solid start to the tournament by winning both their games against Bangladesh and Pakistan. However, the main credit goes to the strong bowling performances along with the match-winning knocks of the right-handed batters Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli for playing a composed knock in crucial run chases.
Similarly, New Zealand’s 60-run victory against Pakistan, followed by a 5-wicket triumph over Bangladesh bolstered their net run rate.
Who Could be India’s Opponent in CT 2025 Semi-Final?
As of February 25 (Tuesday), the four teams in Group B namely South Africa, Australia, England, and Afghanistan are still in contention with each team having played just a single game. The opponent to play against India is yet to be decided.
In addition, the abandoned match between South Africa and Australia makes the qualification scenario much more complicated.
When and Where will India Play its Champions Trophy 2025 Semi-Final?
As India’s matches in the tournament are scheduled to take place at the DICS in Dubai, they will play Semi-final 1 on March 04 at the same venue, regardless of their position in the Group A points table. In other words, New Zealand is confirmed to participate in the second semi-final match at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 05, even if they rank at first or second position in the points table.
With the competition being open, the team that concludes second in Group B will face India (if India finishes at the top position in Group A).
On the contrary, India losing their last game against the Kiwis would rank them as the runner-up of Group A, and will still make their appearance in the first semi-final to compete against the table toppers of Group B.
