Team India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, is yet to receive their Asia Cup 2025 trophy even after triumphing over Pakistan in the final by 5 wickets.
Several reports claimed that Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), ran away with the trophy from the Dubai International Cricket Stadium (DICS).
Also, Naqvi, being the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was said to have absconded after the Indian cricket board refused to accept the trophy from a Pakistani.
NO Trophy Drama in Asia Cup 2025 Final
Team India defeated their arch-rivals Pakistan thrice in the Asia Cup 2025, including the Group Stages, Super Fours, and final.
However, India was clear with their stance not to receive a trophy from a Pakistani official following the Pahalgam terror attacks earlier this year in April.
It is said that Naqvi was ready to present the trophy personally to the Indian cricket team. Following the Indian cricket team’s refusal to the alternative presentation arrangement, the ACC president decided to move the trophy from the venue.
Where is the Asia Cup 2025 Trophy Currently Placed?
As of now, the Asia Cup 2025 trophy is safely secured in the ACC office in Dubai within the ICC Academy Complex, staffed by two employees. Also, Naqvi has strictly instructed that the trophy should not be moved without his permission, and he took a firm stand on handing over the honor himself.
Typically, the trophy should have been awarded to the winning team, which hasn’t happened so far. Also, to date, no official announcement or timeline has been announced about the ACC’s next move.
While India was keen to secure a victory over their arch-rival, Pakistan, on the other hand, focused on creating new controversies whenever the Indians triumphed over them in the tournament.
Will the Issue Be Resolved or Not?
During the ACC Annual General Meeting held on September 30 (Tuesday), it was decided that the five test-playing countries—India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh would discuss the issue to arrive at a decisive outcome.
So far, no update has been announced, and the meeting is planned to be organized between November 04 and 07. However, Mohsin Naqvi’s attendance during the meeting remains a mystery as he stayed away from the conference held this year in July.
Also, the ACC’s insiders revealed that Naqvi might send a staff member without attending the meeting. So, if the PCB chief doesn’t attend the session, further complications will be added to solve the ongoing issue related to official protocols.
However, a deadlock is certain to persist if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Naqvi do not reach an agreement.
Also, the BCCI is clear to take the proceedings in the upcoming ICC meeting held next month. The entire cricketing world is eager to know the actions taken by the global governing body in this issue.
‘You Might Snatch the Cup’: Indian Spinner Slammed Naqvi
After the Asia Cup 2025 final, Team India’s rising talented spinner Varun Chakravarthy shared a humorous post on Instagram showing him in bed and holding a coffee cup in place of the trophy. Here is how the 34-year-old lashed out at Naqvi’s unprofessional actions:
“Yeah! There were a lot of plans for me. After winning the second match, we were confident of winning against them (referring to Pakistan) in the final.
So, I dreamt of sleeping with the trophy. But, after the game, I realized there was nothing next to me other than just a coffee cup. So, I decided to go with it.
It is a good feeling that we were about to win all the games. Currently, we are the world’s No. 1 team.
Wohh Shaayad Cup chheenn saktee hainn (it means you can snatch the trophy from us), but we are the Asian Champions,” Chakravarthy said.
Conclusion
It’s understood that the situation has been dragged beyond worse, and this is the right time for Mohsin Naqvi to award the trophy to the winning team as soon as possible to avoid the matter getting worse. The ACC officials are expected to arrive at a reasonable agreement.
At the same time, Naqvi’s absence during the meeting might increase complications. As a result, the trophy might remain preserved in the ACC office.
Also, the ACC president should be aware of the fact that BCCI, with multiple options, would be ready to take necessary action to ensure that the trophy is granted to the winning team that defeated Pakistan.
With ample time left before the meeting, the Indian cricket board will do its best to proceed with the next steps appropriately.
